Bacaro Vocabulary
A small introduction to the wine bars of Venice.

Bacaro (BAH-kah-roh) – named after the god of wine, Bacchus, these Venetian wine bars are casual places to dine on cicheti, and enjoy small glasses of wine, or ombre

Cicheti (chee-KEH-tee)– these are bite-sized snacks served in the bacari of Venice. They may be marinated artichokes, tiny open-faced seafood sandwiches, or baby octopus in olive oil, served simply on a toothpick. Whatever it is, they are always fresh, simple, inexpensive, and delicious.

Giro di Ombre (JEE-roh dee OHM-breh)– “a late-afternoon, early-evening ombre crawl”

Ombra (OHM-brah) – literally means shadow. Ombre are also known as small glasses of wine served at bacari.

Ubriaco/a (oo-bree-AH-koh) – this is what you become when you’ve had too many ombre. “we don’t drink at you, we drink with you!”
